Deal for Cowboys CB Henry Excites Kitna

Jon Kitna had no mixed emotions about a trade Saturday afternoon that sent him from the Lions to the Dallas Cowboys.
Kitna was excited about going to a high-profile contender, but he also had good feelings about his three-year stay with the Lions.
Kitna started 36 straight games for the Lions before going on injured reserve after the fourth game of the 2008 season. In Dallas, he will assume the backup role to starter Tony Romo.
In exchange, the Cowboys sent cornerback Anthony Henry to the Lions. Henry has played the last four years of his eight-year career with Dallas. He started 15 games last year and has 90 career starts.
Henry, 6-1 and 207 pounds, has 29 career interceptions but only one in 2008. He had six in ’07 and a career high of 10 in 2001 with Clevleand.
Kitna had exchanged text messages since Friday with wide receiver Roy Williams, his former Lions teammate who was traded to Dallas early last season.
The deal ended some uncertainty for Kitna, who was on the last year of his contract and could have been released next week.
“It’s exciting for me to know where I’m going to be,” Kitna said. “To be going down there, that’s exciting. It’ll be in a different role than I’m used to the last three years.
“I’m being redeployed in God’s army.”
His only contact with anyone connected with the Cowboys was exchanging messages with Williams.
“Roy and I just texted back and forth,” Kitna said. “That’s it. I’m excited to get a chance to end my career with one of the great franchises in the NFL.”
Kitna, who turns 37 on Sept. 21, has spent 13 seasons in the NFL with Seattle, Cincinnati and Detroit since making Seattle’s practice squad in 1996 as an undrafted free agent.
The Lions signed him as a free agent in 2006 as new head coach Rod Marinelli sought to rebuild the quarterback position. Kitna assumed a leadership role immediately and was largely unchallenged as the starter.
However, with new head coach Jim Schwartz, the offense is changing. Daunte Culpepper, signed as a free agent in midseason, has the inside track on the starting job – at least for now. Culpepper’s contract was reworked earlier in February to put him on a one-year contract for the 2009 season.
However, NFL sources say the Lions are interested in signing free-agent quarterback J.P. Losman, Buffalo’s first—round draft pick in 2004. Should that happen, Culpepper will have stiff competition from a veteran.
There also were reports that the Lions had talked about a three-team deal that would have given them Denver Broncos quarterback Jay Cutler. Matt Cassel, dealt earlier Saturday by New England to Kansas City, was part of that trade.
The Cowboys recently released veteran backup Brad Johnson, creating a need for another veteran to play behind Romo.
Kitna had contract issues with the Lions. Had he been on their roster on March 3, he would have been due a bonus of $1 million. The 2009 season is the last on the four-year contract he signed with the Lions in 2006. His agent is talking to the Cowboys about his contract, Kitna said.
The Lions had one period of relief from their eight-year losing skid with Kitna at quarterback. They were 6-2 at the halfway point of the 2007 season, and a playoff berth was within their grasp. But the team’s play deteriorated in the second half, and the Lions went 1-7 to finish with a 7-9 record.
The 2008 season was a 0-16 disaster. Although Kitna played only in the first four games, he felt the anguish of his teammates as they made history as the NFL’s only 0-16 season.
Kitna was disappointed that the Lions couldn’t turn into winners in his three-year stay.
“I thought we had a chance to turn things around, but the wheels fell off,” Kitna said. “There are a lot of things about winning in the NFL that aren’t just talent.”
Kitna is a devout Christian, and he is leaving the Lions with good feelings about players he bonded with off the field.
“Just seeing guys have their lives changed – about 15 guys,” he said. “It was great to see how they changed.”

Last season, I’ve been told the Lions ranked potential QB acquisitions in this order—Losman, Simms, Culpepper. They couldn’t get the first two and signed Culpepper. Simms is off the market now. If they stand pat with what they have—Culpepper, Stanton and Henson—going into the draft, it would send a signal that they’ll draft Stafford.

I like Kitna as a player but his time had come and gone in Detroit - it’s great that we got a starting CB for him in the end. Beginning to wonder if Jerry Jones feels sorry for us.

Once again, it seems like Mayhew has done a good job working the Cowboy connection. I like Kitna as a player but his time had come and gone in Detroit - it’s great that we got a starting CB for him in the end. Beginning to wonder if Jerry Jones feels sorry for us.
It will be interesting to watch how the Lions manage their QB search in FA. Although the first pick is virtually impossible to trade, if Stafford has a stellar pro-day, it is in their best interest to make the league believe they are taking him with the first pick for trade potential. Signing a veteran like Losman would show a lot of cards on the Stafford front in my opinion.
