Lions’ first signing: Running back Maurice Morris of the Seattle Seahawks became the Lions’ first addition in free-agency, reaching agreement with the team on a three-year contract.
The deal was reported by NFL.com, and is worth $7 million.
Morris has played seven NFL seasons, mostly as a backup. He was Seattle’s second-round draft pick in 2002 out of Oregon. The Lions drafted quarterback Joey Harrington of Oregon third overall in ’02.
Visiting:
No other signings or agreements were completed, as of late afternoon, as the Lions held to their plan for free-agency, targeting role players opposed to stars as the free-agent signing period opened Friday.
Guard Derrick Dockery, recently released by the Buffalo Bills, and wide receiver Nate Washington of Pittsburgh were the first to visit the Lions.
Dockery would fill a need at left guard, where Edwin Mulitalo started most of the last two seasons but was released earlier this month.
Washington could help as the No. 2 receiver, opposite Calvin Johnson, the emerging star.
The Lions also could be focusing on Pittsburgh Steelers cornerback Bryant McFadden to help strengthen one of their biggest weaknesses. McFadden is one of the players the Lions have targeted, according to Peter King of SI.com.
Dockery fits the mold of a bigger, stronger team wanted by new head coach Jim Schwartz. Dockery is 6-6 and 330 pounds. He was Washington’s third-round draft pick from Texas in 2003 and has been a starter his entire career, playing all 96 games with 93 starts. He signed with Buffalo as a free agent in 2007 and was let go recently because of financial reasons.
Washington made Pittsburgh’s roster as an undrafted free agent in 2005. He is a speed receiver, averaging 16.4 yards on 104 catches with 12 TDs.
His best season was 2008 – 40 catches, 631 yards and three TDs.
Departing: Fullback Moran Norris, who provided strong blocking after being picked up in midseason, has signed a three-year contract with the San Francisco 49ers.
The Lions tried to re-sign Morris, without success, before the free-agent period began. Morris reportedly signed for three years and $5 million.
