A football signed by Stafford drew a winning bid of $200 at the recent Father Kern/Steve Yokich Golf Outing to benefit Most Holy Trinity in Corktown.
The $200 bid was the highest ever for a signed football in the Trinity outing. The record didn’t last long, and the Lions contributed to breaking it.
They have been regular contributors to the Trinity event. A year ago, the Lions donated a ball signed by the entire team. However, there were no bids last year on the 2008 ball.
Vaughn Derderian, owner of the world famous Anchor Bar in downtown Detroit and an organizer of the Trinity event, spotted the 2008 ball at the church before this year’s event. He included it in this year’s auction.
“It’s a piece of history,” Derderian said Tuesday. “The Lions are the only team to go 0-16.
“The bidding on that ball was fast and furious.”
Derderian’s assessment of the 2008 ball’s value was accurate. The 2008 ball went for $210.
Bottom line: there is a price on losing.
Maybe Holy Trinity can work out a reciprocal deal and put in a good word with St. Jude—the patron saint of lost causes.
