Matthew Stafford is doing his best to follow Lions Coach Jim Schwartz’s playbook – and his policy on not giving out information about injuries.
Stafford injured his right knee cap in the fourth quarter of Sunday’s loss at Chicago. He left the game and did not return.
There were media reports that Stafford had a partial, and temporary, dislocation of his right knee. He did not return to the game and had a wrap on the knee.
In the locker room, Stafford was in good spirits as he spoke to the media. On Monday, Schwartz said Stafford’s status was “day to day” for Sunday’s home game with Pittsburgh.
Schwartz didn’t offer any more information, and neither did Stafford in his regular weekly radio appearance on the Mitch Albom Show on WJR-760 in Detroit.
“The status is, I’m day to day,” Stafford said. “To tell the truth, im not really sure what happened. Coach Schwartz is handling all this. He’ll give the media a full update on Wednesday what’s going on.”
Stafford was injured when he was sacked for the fifth and final time. His right knee seemed to bend back slightly, causing the injury.
“Truthfully, I’m not 100—percent sure,” Stafford said when asked what happened to cause the injury. “It’s just the heat of the game. Obviously, I felt a little discomfort in my knee.”
Stafford played cat and mice with Albom and his co-host, Ken Brown.
Stafford would not reveal much about whether the knee actually had slipped out of joint.
“My knee cap is currently in the front of my knee,” he said. “We’re all right.”
He was asked if he could play today if there were a game.
“I’m not really into hypothetical, but I think I could give it a go,” Stafford said. “The trainers will have to take another look and clear me and all that.”
